BESPOKE BREATHING PRODUCTS
Not every project suits a standard solution.
Folia Bespoke Breathing Products bring together active biofiltration, industrial design and horticultural systems to create custom planted environments tailored to specific architectural, environmental and operational requirements.
Building on research undertaken through the Breathing Wall innovation program, these systems move air through the plant root zone, supporting the natural process of biofiltration and allowing planted systems to contribute more actively to improved indoor environmental quality.
Each system is developed in response to the unique requirements of a project. This may include freestanding installations, integrated furniture, sculptural elements, workplace features or architecturally integrated planting systems.
Through Folia Consulting services, we work closely with clients, architects, designers, and engineers to explore how active planting systems can be meaningfully integrated into buildings and public spaces.

DESIGN, CONSULTANCY & INTEGRATION
Considerations such as project objectives, spatial requirements, airflow integration, planting strategy, maintenance access and long-term performance inform the final outcome. The result is a system shaped not only by its intended function, but by the specific conditions in which it will operate.
Our approach at Folia combines practical experience in delivering and maintaining green infrastructure with ongoing research into active planted systems, ensuring each project balances technical performance with architectural integration and long-term viability.
EXAMPLE SYSTEMS
Breathing Stand
The Breathing Stand explored how active biofiltration could be integrated into a freestanding object suitable for workplaces, public spaces and commercial interiors.Combining planting, airflow and furniture-scale design, the system demonstrated an alternative approach to traditional green walls, bringing active planting systems into the everyday environments people occupy.
The project formed part of a broader investigation into how green infrastructure can become more adaptable, accessible and integrated within the built environment.
Breathing Tree
Developed for SafetyCulture Headquarters, the Breathing Tree transformed active biofiltration into a sculptural workplace feature. The custom-designed installation combines planting, airflow and architectural expression within a single living structure, creating a focal point that contributes to both workplace wellbeing and environmental quality.
The project demonstrates how active planted systems can become part of the identity of a space, moving beyond landscape infrastructure to become an integrated architectural element.
RESEARCH & VALIDATION
Research has investigated how active planted systems can contribute to indoor environmental quality through biofiltration, airflow integration and plant-root interactions.
Published testing has demonstrated:
- Up to 95% reduction in volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- Up to 90% reduction in PM2.5 particulate matter
- Increased carbon dioxide reduction compared with passive green wall systems
- Clean Air Delivery Rates >500m³ per day under tested conditions
This body of research continues to inform the development of bespoke active planting systems and future green infrastructure projects.
