MANLY VALE CAR PARK

In Sydney’s Northern Beaches, we worked with the Council to transform a strongly-opposed multi-storey car park into a living sculpture the community embraced.
With 150 parking spaces, and just moments from the speedy B-Line bus service, Manly Vale’s commuter car park is part of the NSW Government’s plan to reduce congestion on CBD roads. When the community rejected proposed plans for their ugliness and lack of amenity, TfNSW invited us to consult on a more appealing solution.
Using the power of plants, we enhanced the designs to create a unique piece of living infrastructure, concealing bare concrete and cars with Junglefy Breathing Wall panels. The first of their kind, they don’t just create clean air for the surrounding area, but rotate to maximise the effects and improve access during maintenance.
A beautiful addition to the neighbourhood, they also reduce noise pollution from the adjoining motorway and boost biodiversity in a heavily urbanised area. Plants were chosen to make the most of the location, with key food providing species planted on the sunny western side to make foraging for pollen and nectar easier for insects and other pollinators.

Folia Network acknowledges the traditional owners of the land and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.
