BIJOU
Bijou is a residential development located in Balmain, on Wangal land in Sydney, within a building that has undergone multiple transformations over more than a century. From the National Theatre (1912), to cinema and performance spaces, and later adaptive reuse into apartments.
Working on the integration of modular vertical garden systems across the building’s façade, layered greenery was introduced into a tightly constrained inner-city site. The planting strategy was designed to sit lightly against the existing architecture, creating a living surface that is visually enhancing while respecting the building’s historic character.
Planter box and trellis systems were carefully detailed to retain visual access to the original 1912 brickwork, allowing the heritage façade to remain legible beneath the planting. Climbing species extend vertically across the structure, forming a continuous green presence that is experienced as a series of framed views from within the building.
Rather than obscuring the architecture, the green infrastructure was conceived as a selective layer, one that reveals and softens the building at the same time. From each level, residents experience shifting vignettes of planting that bring texture, shade and seasonal variation into the urban fabric.
The system contributes to improved microclimate conditions, acoustic moderation and local biodiversity, while also introducing a sense of calm and separation from the surrounding density of Balmain.
Bijou demonstrates a successful approach to retrofitting biophilic systems into heritage and constrained residential environments. Where planting is not applied as surface treatment, but carefully integrated into the architectural logic of existing structures.
